Supplementary Handout I
I have posted the handout to help you review the grammar learned in Unit 2: Present Continuous Tense. It is a summary of how to use this tense. I also included a lot of examples so I hope that it will help you prepare yourself before the coming examination. If you have any questions, write to me.
P.S. I will post more exercises to help you practice what we have learned in class. Don't forget to prepare for a quiz next week. The test is all about Present Continuous Tense. There are 25 items and they are not so difficult. If you have read the summary below, I think you can do the test. Good luck!!!

Examples:
I am watching TV.
He is quickly learning the language.
NOTE: When you are using a verb tense with more than one part such as Present Continuous (is learning), adverbs often come between the first part and the second part (is quickly learning).
______________________________________________________________
USE 1 NOW
We use the Present Continuous Tense to talk about activities happening now, at this very moment.
Examples:
You are learning English now.
Please turn off the light. I am going to bed now. Goodnight!
Let's go out now. It isn't raining any more.
"Where's Tom?" "He is doing the dishes."
What are you doing? I am looking for a key.
Why aren't you doing your homework? I am helping my mother in the kitchen.
__________________________________________________________
USE 2 Longer Actions in Progress Now
We can also use the Present Continuous Tense to talk about activities happening around now, and not necessarily this very moment. In English, now can mean "this second," "today," "this month," "this year," "this century" and so on.
Examples:
Sally is studying really hard for her exams this week.
I am reading a really interesting book this month.
We aren't working hard these days.
____________________________________________________________
USE 3 Near Future
The Present Continuous Tense is also used to talk about activities happening in the near future, especially for planned future events.
Examples:
I am meeting some friends after work this afternoon.
I am not going to the party tonight.
Is he visiting his parents next weekend?
Isn't he coming with us tonight?
I am seeing my dentist on Wednesday.
Polly is coming for dinner tomorrow.
Are you doing anything tonight?
We aren't going on holiday next week.
____________________________________________________________
USE 4 Changes happening around now
We use the present continuous when we talk about changes happening around now.
Examples:
The population of the world is rising very fast.
Malee is still ill but she is getting better slowly.
Is your Chinese getting better?
The weather is getting hotter.
_____________________________________________________________
USE 5 Repetition and Irritation with "Always"
The Present Continuous with words such as "always" or "constantly" expresses the idea that something irritating or shocking often happens.
Examples:
She is always coming to class late.
He is constantly talking. I wish he would shut up.
I don't like them because they are always complaining.
